The Year We Did Less
Our wall calendar hung on the kitchen wall, covered in a chaotic mosaic of colors. Every square was filled with scribbled notes, soccer games, piano lessons, dentist appointments. There wasn't a single white square left, just a frantic blur that mocked our attempts to keep our family life in check.
Standing there one morning, staring at the smudged ink and overcrowded days, I felt a pang of something I couldn't quite name. Exhaustion? Frustration? Maybe a bit of both. All I knew was that something needed to change.
Finding Our Own Rhythm
I decided to do something radical: I started saying no. No to extra activities, no to endless commitments. It was unnerving at first, like stepping into an unknown world without a map. The kids were surprised, their social calendars suddenly lighter, but they seemed almost relieved. It was like skipping stones on a pond and watching the ripples spread, one small change, having far-reaching effects.
Discovering Space
With fewer commitments, an unfamiliar quiet settled over our home. On weekends, instead of rushing from one event to the next, we found ourselves lingering over breakfast or playing board games well past noon. The kids, once preoccupied with their schedules, began to invent games and find joy in the simplicity of just being together.
A Chance to Connect
As we cleared the calendar, we found corners of our home we hadn't noticed before. The couch became the hub of conversations that didn't need to be hurried. We rediscovered the backyard, turning it into a place of exploration and play. The kids grew closer, and I found moments of connection with each of them that I hadn't realized I was missing. The frantic energy was replaced by a gentle rhythm that allowed us to really see one another.
Keeping It Simple
It's been months now, and the calendar still has more breathing space than it ever did before. There are moments when the urge to fill it tempts me, but I remind myself of the calm we've cultivated. We still have commitments, of course, but they no longer consume us. We've found a balance, embracing the richness that simplicity can bring. And in those blank spaces on the calendar, we've found our family again.
As I stand in the kitchen, looking at our calendar, it no longer mocks me. It's become a quiet sign to the peace we've chosen, a reminder that sometimes, less truly is more.
